A total of 57 papers was presented at the 106th Euromech Colloquium held from 11 to 14 September 1978 in Grenoble, France. The present report discusses these contributions with a view toward giving an up-to-date view of current research on convection. Six problem areas are considered: Rayleigh-Benard convection, penetrative convection and effects of stable stratification, doubly diffusive convection, rotating systems, other driving forces, and general theories and transition to turbulence. The grouping is basically the same as was adopted in the colloquium. Some minor rearrangements are made to facilitate the discussion of related papers. The activity in the convection field is stimulated by new experimental techniques and by the ever increasing importance of new phenomena and applications, such as convection in liquid crystals, electroconvection and convection in solar-energy storage systems. Needs for future work that have emerged from the colloquium are mentioned.
