The effect of convective penetration into an overlying stable layer on the degree of instability of convective, gravity, and acoustic modes is studied. A plane-parallel model atmosphere consisting of convectively unstable and stable layers of finite depths is considered. Radiative dissipation is taken into account by means of Newton's law of cooling, which is applicable to optically thin atmospheres. It is shown that convective penetration promotes instability of convective, gravity, and acoustic modes under suitable conditions.
