The status of solar absorber/thruster effort is summarized and potential future applications and advanced solar thermal propulsion concepts are discussed. Solar thermal propulsion is capable of moderate-to-high engine performance at moderate-to-low thrust levels, which makes this concept suitable for space transportation of cargo with payload advantages over conventional chemical propulsion systems and trip time advantages over solar electric propulsion systems.
