The shake-up process following 1s photoionization is considered along the Be isoelectronic sequence. For atomic beryllium strong shake up excitations have been observed experimentally. Both 2s→2p excitation which is induced by the ejected electron, and 2s→3s excitation which is mostly due to configuration interaction, decrease rapidly with the atomic charge. C, N, O and Ne Be-like ions exhibit non-negligible shake up excitations. This gives rise to Kα lines from the 1s2s2p or 1s2p2 states.
