Star formation properties (slope alpha , upper mass limit Mmax of IMF, age t) of 105 star formation complexes (SFCs) in 20 galaxies are estimated by inverting their observed integrated colours into parameters of star formation. Mass functions of individual star formation complexes are studied in three spirals, one irregular and one peculiar galaxy. The derived stellar initial mass functions (IMFs) in the studied galaxies are close to the Salpeter IMF with slopes alpha in (-2.06 - -2.57). The calculated star formation rate (SFR) shows a burst of star formation in the peculiar colliding galaxy NGC 4038/39. The changes in star formation properties between different galaxies are related to the changes in individual SFCs mass functions and the correlation of the IMF of individual SFCs with their mass.
