An accurate method of calculation of the infrared atmospheric radiance under given climatic conditions is important in many areas, including electrooptics system design, infrared astronomy, and utilization of solar energy. This information can be obtained by means of prediction obtained through the use of the LOWTRAN 4 and LOWTRAN 5 computer codes. The atmospheric models in these computer codes present the optical properties of the atmosphere and their dependence on the altitude. Studies conducted in connection with the present investigation have shown that the digitization of these properties according to the altitude (or the number of the atmospheric layers and their altitudes) is not an optimal one. It is proposed to consider an accurate and optimal division based on a thorough analysis of all the factors which contribute to the atmospheric radiance. Attention is given to a quantitative description of the dependence of the sky radiance on the angle of observation, as well as on the seasons of the year and the time of day.
