The IR properties and optical appearance of IRAS sources associated with the Lynds opacity-class-6 dark clouds are examined to discuss the classification and evolutionary time-scales of the sources. Because the IRAS color properties do not permit the analysis of different evolutionary phases, broad-band photometric data are incorporated into the analysis. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are thereby developed, which can be compared to the theoretical models to derive their evolutionary status by means of the classification system. The remaining sources in the sample are classified by means of statistical methods based on the classification of the young stellar objects. The optically visible sources with embedded core colors are considered to be class II-D sources. The duration of the class I and II phases are found to be about 200,000 years, a result which conflicts with previous studies.
