The Milky Way consists of the galactic disk, the halo and the galactic bulge. Halo and galactic bulge contain an old stellar population. The population of the central Δl×Δb ≡ 3°×0.3° (the nuclear bulge) shows a great similarity to the young stellar population of the spiral arms. Its stellar population is investigated here applying methods of infrared astronomy. A K band (λ2.2 μm) mosaic of the central ≡30 pc of the nuclear bulge was obtained, which contains ≡6×104 luminous, discrete stars and ≡6×108 weaker stars, which form an unresolved background continuum. The core radii of these two components are determined. For the mosaic and subareas K band luminosity functions (KLFs) are constructed. The KLF of the nuclear bulge is separated from that of the galactic bulge and disk. For the unresolved stars of the mosaic a model-KLF, based on a Salpeter initial mass function, is constructed which represents the observations correctly. The integral radio-IR-spectrum of the central 30″ is decomposed into Planck components of dust and stars. Estimates of the luminosity of the components and the hydrogen masses associated with the dust are derived. The spatial variation of the extinction and the Planck temperatrue of the dust components is discussed based on preliminary ISO-spectra.
