Infrared observations in the 20-1000-micron wavelength range require cooling of telescope optics and baffles in the 10-K range. The present availability of cooling technologies for operating spaceborne cooled observational instrumentation is demonstrated. Efforts and studies to assess the technical feasibility of cooled infrared telescopes are summarized. Attention is given to the current status of detectors, with special emphasis on cryogenic technologies based on helium. For Spacelab missions, the effects of Shuttle and Spacelab characteristics on infrared telescopes are considered. Operational modes of cooled telescopes in astronomy and for planetary missions are indicated
