This paper presents a brief history of space infrared observation for astronomy. Different means for infrared observation above the atmosphere - balloon, aircraft, rocket, and satellite are briefly described and emphasis is put on infrared satellite programs. For example, IRAS and its instruments, its target and the main results, the ISO program, its scientific goals and instruments are introduced in some details. At the end of this paper, the planned or possible programs for space infrared activity towards the end of the century including SL2 IRT, COBE, IRTS, HST, SIRTF, FIRST, LDR are also mentioned.
