Observations of a selected sample of Be stars in the JKL bands and in Hα are presented. Our data indicate that both infrared excess and Hα originate in a common region, which we identify as being a disc-shaped envelope around the equatorial region, responsible also for the observed optical continuum polarization. We present a method to estimate the electron density of such an envelope using the continuum and the line emission data.
