High sensitivity infrared detectors made from extrinsic semiconductors are of considerable importance for astronomical missions on satellites in Earth orbit. High energy radiation changes their sensitivity and their calibration. The photoconductors therefore necessitate onboard annealing and frequent recalibrations. Mid infrared diode lasers with low power dissipation are used for both applications, annealing with the stimulated, and recalibration with the spontaneous emission mode.
