Planetary gravitational fields are considered from a probabilistic viewpoint so that information theory can be applied to determine efficient ways of measuring gravitational fields from satellites. The transformation of a gravitational field is represented as a process of frequency filtering with the transfer function of the corresponding filter. From this expression, the entropy characteristics of a gravitational field are determined, along with their behavior at satellite altitudes. The masses of planetary bodies are obtained from measurements of their associated gravitational fields.
