The basic principles of the spectrographic method for investigating the properties of cosmic rays are reviewed. Particular attention is given to the use of the method for the determination of the temperature variations of the hard muon and soft components of cosmic rays. Some experimental results on the use of the method are discussed, including the pitch-angle dependence of the modulation depth of cosmic rays in interplanetary space, geomagnetic effects in cosmic rays, and the determination of atmospheric temperature from ground-based observations of cosmic rays.
