Helium isotope research has revealed that the magmatic He component in the gases from a steam well located about 3 km north of the active Oshima volcano has increased since the violent volcanic eruptions from November 15 to December 18, 1986. This result confirms a direct relationship between magmatic activity and elevated He-3/He-4 ratios in groundwater/hydrothermal systems. The crater-to-steam-well distance, time lag between eruptions, and He-3/He-4 increase point to a magmatic component velocity in the fluid flow (about several tens of m per day) which is higher than typical groundwater flow in deep sedimentary basins of Japan.
