The influence of the tide's variable delay in a system of two celestial bodies on the evolution of the orbital elements of the tide-generating body is investigated. An equation describing the dynamics of the variable delay is derived. It is shown that, if the separation of the bodies of the system is comparable with their size (a close binary), then the process of oscillations of the delay leads to evolutionary variations of the parameters of the orbit.
