The dissipation of a meteor trail as a function of the ionic composition and the electric field is investigated numerically, and critical values of the electric field (E1 and E2) are determined. With E ≤ E1, the dissipation process resembles diffusion and the lifetimes are proportional to the coefficient of diffusion. With E1 < E < E2, the dissipation process breaks down into two phases, with differing lifetimes as a function of the mass of the meteor trail. With E > E2, the lifetime becomes independent of the electric field.
