The inward movement of the subsolar stagnation point of the Earth's magnetosphere when the interplanetary magnetic field turns from northward to southward in terms of the following assumptions: (1) there is a time averaged topology of interconnected field lines; and (2) the displacement of the subsolar point due to field line erosion can be described on the level of the fluid (MHD) theory for steady state conditions. Model calculations result in an analytical formula which expresses the stand off distance as a function of the solar wind plasma parameters and an IMF component. The IMF related difference in the average position of the stagnation point is not independent of the solar wind dynamical pressure.
