Neutron Stars: Crusts, Neutron Stars: Magnetic Fields

Scientific paper

The chemical potential of a non-zero temperature electron gas embedded in a strong magnetic field is discussed and the effect of a magnetic field on the electron screening potential is analyzed. The influence of a magnetic field on the electron capture ratio of the nuclide 33S, as an example, at various temperatures is investigated. It is shwon that a strong enough magnetic field decreases the capture rate very much at sufficiently low temperatures and densities, but the magnetic fields (109 - 1013G) on surfaces of neutron stars have almost no effect on the electron capture rate.
