Understanding the nature of the interactions of the visible and near-infrared radiation (400-2500 nm) with the surface is necessary for the interpretation of remotely sensed data. Previous studies have shown that the texture and some physical properties of the surface (sample) will influence the polarization (1,2,6). Spectrophotometric analyses of basalt and other Mars analoges have shown the influence of phase angle on the spectral character of these materials (3,4). The influence of polarization on the visible to near-infrared spectral character of several samples has been measured for multiple phase angles. The samples used in our experiments are iron-rich smectites prepared in the laboratory as Mars soil analog materials (5). Bi-directional spectra were measured at phase angles of 30deg , 50deg , 60deg , 80deg (incidence angle fixed at 30deg , variable emergence angle in the plane of incidence). In order to show the influence of polarization on the spectrophotometric properties of these samples the spectra were measured under two perpendicular polarization positions. We have compared the bi-directional reflectance spectrum for each phase angle with the corresponding reflectance spectrum corrected for the effect of polarization to show the influence on the spectral behaviour. These measurements indicate that polarization contributes greatly to the spectrophotometric character of fine-grained Mars soil analogs and that polarization should be taken into consideration in the analysis of spectra from Mars.
