Neutron Stars: Gamma Rays, Pulsars: Relativistic Effects

Scientific paper

The general relativistic and quantum-mechanical effects on the γ-ray radiation from neutron stars are studied. The authors conclude that, for low magnetic dipole moments, the quantum-mechanical effect is unimportant, but the general relativistic effect significantly reduces the upper limit. For high magnetic dipole moments, the two effects cancel out each other, that is, the upper limit is hardly influenced by them. They discuss the implications of these results on the γ-ray spectra of neutron stars.
