Clusters of galaxies are sensitive probes of the mass-energy content of the Universe. However, robustly estimating cluster masses is non-trivial and often relies on scaling relations between cluster mass and observables such as X-ray temperature and luminosity. The systematic bias and scatter in these relations must be understood in order to use clusters for cosmology. Dynamical state is one possible source of scatter; merging clusters exhibit luminosity and temperature jumps that can bias hydrostatic mass estimates upward. In this work, we investigate the influence of dynamical state on scatter in X-ray mass-observable relations using cosmological simulations of galaxy clusters. To better quantify their dynamical states, we extract a merger tree for each cluster at z=0 and identify its time since last merger. A few other measures based on cluster morphologies are also used and compared to determine whether they can effectively represent a cluster's dynamical state. In order to make direct contact with observations, we have developed a tool to simulate Chandra X-ray cluster observations from the simulations. We show the relative contributions to scatter in the mass-observable relations from merging and relaxed clusters and how they change with redshift. Using our large sample of simulated clusters, we derive the form and evolution of the scatter, which can be used in self-calibration studies based on future cluster surveys.
