The spectral inversion algorithm of Johns and Lin (1991) is examined in detail. It is demonstrated that their method makes a priori assumptions about the electron energy distribution in the form of a limitation on the minimum width that any feature may have. A strategy is suggested for selecting the size of each bin in the Johns and Lin procedure which ensures that the fractional error in each bin of the reconstruction is approximately constant. It is shown that the method does no better than the regularization techniques. It is shown that the way regularization can adjust the resolution to produce the 'best' overall solution rather than obtaining a solution with a specified resolution or noise level can lead to significantly better estimates of the underlying source function.
