An overview of inertial navigation is provided, and approaches to its implementation are illustrated. The principles of self-contained inertial navigation are discussed within the framework of the design of a system for earth-based navigation, and attention is given to issues of sensor reference, the mechanization of the gyroscope-accelerometer system, component selection, and stellar-aided inertial navigation. The system design of a ring laser gyro-based inertial navigation system is then reviewed with particular emphasis on design responses to requirements on accuracy, alignment, temperature range, shock and vibration environments and recalibration. Analysis and design improvements necessary for the transition from a medium-accuracy to a high-accuracy aircraft inertial navigation system are also presented, and the principles, system configurations and performance parameters of terrestrial stellar-inertial navigation systems are discussed. Consideration is also given to the potential and limitations of fiber-optic gyros, and to the principles of the magnetic resonance gyroscope.
