Banded gneiss enclaves occur within synkinematic granitoid diapirs associated with zones of dynamic-style metamorphism in the Eastern Goldfields Province, Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. Field studies, including structural analysis and relative ages from contact relationships, indicate that the gneisses may predate greenstone evolution and they are interpreted as remnants of a reactivated sialic basement. Directly supporting isotopic data are not available. Intrusive granitoids are subdivided on the basis of their contact relationships into older synkinematic diapirs and younger post-kinematic composite batholiths: the former are restricted to the margins of some greenstone belts and occur within linear domains of dynamic-style, high-grade metamorphism. A model based on the reactivation of sialic basement by diapirism is presented to account for the association of gneisses and synkinematic granitoids in the linear dynamic-style domains. The lack of preserved basement-greenstone cover relationships in these terrains may not be fortuitous. It may reflect the inherent susceptibility of these unconformable contacts to tectonic reactivation of the basement, the controls of which may be pre-greenstone in origin.
