The principal-component method in statistics was applied to a time series of solar magnetograms in order to calculate integrated indices for the large-scale solar magnetic field. The two indices obtained are used to calculate the solar wind velocity at the earth's orbit via multivariate linear regression using solar data for the period from 31 March to 27 August 1979.
