Daily geomagnetic variations at the Nigerian dip equator are analyzed. It is found that the ionospheric current amplification is greater in Nigeria than in Peru, the values being 5.1 and 3.7 respectively. This remarkable difference cannot be explained by the usual theories and suggests the existence of a mechanism in the equatorial ionosphere which has not been taken into account up to now. It is also found that there exists a strong and inhomogeneous anomaly in the earth's conductivity in Nigeria. It is necessary to take into account the current flowing in the F region and its height distribution in order to predict the ionospheric current adequately from the vertical and horizontal components of the external parts of the daily geomagnetic variations.
