Digital images of the visible channel of the GOES5 meteorlogical satellite, and a simple radiative transfer model of the Earth's atmosphere were used to estimate the incoming solar radiation reaching ground. A model which incorporates the effects of Rayleigh scattering and water vapor absorption, the latter parameterized using the surface dew point temperature value, is used. Pyranometer observations, and parameterization versus radiosonde water vapor absorption calculation are compared.
