In-orbit experiments on Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) studied the origin of thermal misalignment responsible for cross-scan attitude error developments up to 100 arcsec, and the effect of helium sloshing on IRAS attitude control performance. Misalignment is attributed to the Fine Sun Sensor brackets and satellite structure. The initial thermal misalignment model with two constants was loaded in the IRAS onboard computer. The in-flight performance of the model demonstrates the feasibility of onboard compensation. No evidence of slosh effects is found, even after a frequency analysis of flight data resulting from special slosh-evoking maneuvers.
