Shaping of command pulses for controlling the motion of a spacecraft about its center of mass requires precise information on the inertia tensor. However, in-flight determination of the inertia tensor is complicated by continuous changes in mass distribution. The aim of the present paper is to analyze in principle the basic requirements of a semiempirical approach to the determination of the inertia tensor. The spacecraft model used to determine the moments of inertia is a dynamic system composed of the spacecraft shell and gyroscope rotors. The influence of the measurement error in the determination of the angular velocities of the spacecraft shell and rotors on the accuracy of the calculations is assessed.
