The OneGeology project, which will map geological data across the Earth over the next two years, began the week of 12 March. Scientists from more than 55 countries will provide geological data for an online digital database that will use a new international standard for the data, a geological exchange language called GEOSciML. The project's target scale is 1:1 million. The first test datasets will become available later this year, and data will be added through 2008. The final data will be made available through interactive map browsers and portals such as Google Earth. The OneGeology project is part of the United Nations International Year of Planet Earth 2008.
