The problems associated with developing large telescopes are usually not discussed in detail in middle and high school science. We are developing educational materials modeled on the successful Astronomy Village educational materials to allow students to explore these challenges. The first set of activities is on "Observatory Site Selection". Students will compare several different sites to select the location for a Giant Segmented Mirror Telescope (GSMT). Students will take into account many different factors including geography, existing infrastructure, weather, light pollution, and geography. Students will learn that each site has it strengths as well as trade-offs. The Site Selection module is currently online and contains teacher tips and evaluation rubrics.
