The U.S. Naval Observatory CCD Astrograph Catalog final release is upcoming later this year. In order to assess the external accuracy of the observed star positions, a random sample of 1502 Hipparcos stars of 8th magnitude and fainter were selected. These stars were excluded from the Tycho-2 reference stars used for a conventional frame-by-frame astrometric reduction.
Preliminary UCAC3 positions of the Hipparcos stars in the sample at epoch of observation are compared to the original Hipparcos Catalog data (ESA 1997) and the new Hipparcos reductions (van Leuven 2007). The epochs of UCAC data are between 1997 and 2004, thus providing about 10 years or more of epoch difference to the Hipparcos mission. The accuracy of the UCAC data is about 10 to 20 mas per coordinate, thus allowing a significant improvement of the proper motions for those Hipparcos stars with relative large proper motion errors in either or both Hipparcos solutions. A subset of the sample stars are found in the Yale Parallax Catalog to allow another comparison.
An overview of the UCAC project and relevant data reduction techniques is presented. A global iteration method currently being implemented should allow a derivation of the positions of all unsaturated Hipparcos stars in UCAC independent of any Hipparcos Catalog data. This will have implications for the celestial reference frame and many interesting groups of stars, including runaway stars.
