This paper focuses on the METOP (METeorological Operational satellite) Payload Module PLM Thermal vacuum testing and the special test equipment's developed to achieve the objectives of the test. These objectives were to demonstrate the performance of the PLM as a complete system at temperature beyond those predicted for flight and as close as possible to qualification for the PLM. To achieve that several instruments required having special test equipment (STE) located in the direct field of view and controlled at specific temperatures. In order to position all the 12 special test equipments, 2 dedicated structures have been designed. In order to achieve the positioning accuracy required (down to 1 mm for certain instruments), dedicated positioning systems were implemented for each individual STE. Constraints such as instrument field of view and integration test sequence had to be taken into account in addition to the mechanical and thermal constraints that the structure encounters during the manipulation and the thermal test. In order to achieve the temperature required (between 30-100 K), different cooling loops have been designed and additional supplies of liquid Nitrogen and gaseous Helium have been put in place. Finally, the dedicated structures carrying the STE was instrumented and controlled in temperature such that the thermal deformation could be reduced and the heat transfer to the satellite minimized.
