A preliminary design configuration and preliminary specifications are presented for a photo-imaging system to be used in outer planet exploration. Image data handling, storage, and transmission requirements are defined for typical encounters with the planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. The quantity of images which can be transmitted is defined both with and without the use of data compression. The anticipated performance which will be obtained in space flight has been demonstrated in laboratory feasibility tests with an experimental camera using a high-density linear array of silicon phototransistors. Images were obtained using photographic test patterns simulating the optical characteristics of the planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus and the planetary satellites, with the exposure levels corresponding to the space flight application. The reproduced images were of excellent contrast, resolution, and clarity. Projections of anticipated performance are presented, using both phototransistor arrays and the more recently developed charge-coupled devices.
