Improved methods for studying turbulence in astrophysics are presented, supplementing the exposition of Dickman and Kleiner (1985). Different possibilities to extract stationary components from existing data are discussed and a new approach to data filtering is given, with the aim of optimal compromises between directional effects and filter sizes. Basic turbulence length scales are introduced together with various parametric representations of the autocorrelation and structure functions. Deviations from the idealized conditions of the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence are summarized and methods of deriving the Kolmogorov exponent presented. The advantages of directly calculating the estimates and filtering the data are stressed throughout the paper.
