Evidence has recently appeared for the existence of sources of cosmic gamma-rays in the Galaxy from which energies as high as 10 to the 16th eV are detected, of the sources Cygnus X-3 being the most definite. Here, a determination is made of the order of magnitude of the expected intensity of X-rays at high Galactic latitudes produced by electron synchrotron radiation in the Galactic magnetic field, the electrons arising from the collisions of cosmic gamma-rays above about 10 to the 15th eV with the microwave background. It is found that for even just one source of the strength of the contemporary Cygnus X-3 source emitting continuously in the Galaxy the X-ray flux at b = 90 deg is significant for X-ray energies above about 100 keV. A firm detection of these hard X-rays would provide the first evidence for the gamma-gamma interaction and also confirm that the microwave radiation extends to at least 10 kpc from the plane.
