The modification of physical processes due to an intense magnetic field is investigated in order to uncover implications for X-ray spectra from binary pulsars. It is found that for large enough fields, the quantum nature of electron orbits must be taken into account, and for densities typical of binary X-ray pulsars it is found that electrons spend most of their time in the ground state. For this case, the production of cyclotron line photons following collisional excitation is estimated and the effects of the transfer of line photons through the hot plasma are considered. A line feature as narrow as reported by Truemper et al. appears unlikely. However, more recent observations allow a much broader line; in addition, a consistent absorption feature due to knock-on electrons may explain the spectral steepening at about 20 keV.
