LIGO has now completed two science data-taking runs, S1 and S2. Results from some of LIGO's searches for gravitational waves using S1 data have been given recently at the AAAS and APS meetings, an overview of which is presented here at APS-NW in plenary session. I explain a technique which LIGO is using called a ``triggered burst search''. This search looks for gravitational-wave bursts (GWBs) which occur in coincidence with externally-detected astrophysical events such as gamma-ray bursts. The search marks timestamps from such events as ``triggers'' to look at data from the gravitational-wave detector(s). By cross-correlating data from two similar detectors, one can statistically determine if an accompanying GWB is present. Using data from S1 and S2, I highlight some of the considerations involved in cross-correlating data from two detectors, and the expectations for the current sensitivity of this search. I discuss how the search can use observed characteristics of the events to test theoretical models, and how the astrophysical community may interpret the results of such a search.
