The Extreme ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has been observing the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray (XUV) spectral irradiance of the Sun shortward regularly since May 2010. The EVE instrument measures from 5 to 105 nm at 0.1 nm resolution, with select broad bands at 0-5 nm, 121.6 nm, and other wavelengths in the EUV, with 10-second or better cadence. While solar activity has been relatively low in the time since the launch of SDO, EVE has quantified heretofore unobserved variability in the EUV and XUV spectral irradiance during both flaring and non-flaring solar conditions. This paper will present that variability and explore the impacts on the thermosphere using a one-dimensional photochemical model and a three dimensional coupled ionosphere thermosphere model.
