Cylindrical aluminum, polycarbonate, teflon and pyrophyllite projectiles, fired at velocities of between 110 and 680 km/sec, with kinetic energies at impact of between 2 and 500 joules, were used in cratering and fragmentation experiments on pure ice. Ice crater diameters were approximately twice as large as basalt craters for the same energy range. The ice crater diameter is well characterized as a single function of the 'late stage effective energy' which has been defined by Mizutani et al. (1983). The present experimental data on cratering and fragmentation of ice indicate that the impacts associated with the largest craters on Callisto and Mimas should have severely fractured these bodies, and that those giant impacts, with a kinetic energy of the order of 10 to the 23rd-10 to the 27th joules, have in all probability significantly affected the evolution of those satellites.
