The relationships between large-scale Birkeland currents, hot plasma, and the B(y) component of the IMF were investigated using data on 48 Viking orbits obtained between July 19 and September 2 of 1986. It was found that the 'traditional cusp' Birkeland current system was located almost entirely in the region associated with the most intense flux of magnetosheathlike electrons. It is inferred that the traditional cusp current system, located poleward of the region 1 system, is associated with field lines that extend to the plasma mantle in the outer magnetosphere and that the field lines associated with the traditional cusp current map to the plasma mantle in the outer magnetosphere. The results of a statistical study carried out to determine the relationship between the B(y) component of the IMF and the flow direction of the region 1 Birkeland current system as a function of magnetic local time indicated that the flow direction of the region 1 current system near noon depends on the B(y) component.
