Young massive compact clusters like NGC 3603 and Arches show no obvious age spreads, but pronounced mass segregation in spite of ages of only a few Myr. In very dense objects this may in part be due to extremely short relaxation times; in other clusters primordial mass segregation seems to be solely responsible. The accelerated dynamical evolution makes it difficult to measure the initial mass function in clusters of high stellar density despite their youth and leads to short evaporation time scales. While mass functions tend to flatten with decreasing distance to the cluster center, the total mass function of rich clusters appears to be close to a Salpeter slope, supporting a universal IMF.
