Techniques for using spectroscopic data on FUV and EUV resonance lines of solar radiation scattered by ionospheric ions or exospheric neutral atoms in the auroral region of the magnetosphere to characterize the global ionospheric outflow are described. Apollo-Soyuz and AE-C satellite data confirmed that resonance line data provides imagery of the ion density distribution in the magnetosphere. The addition of spectroscopic data permits calculating the speed and temperature of ions or neutral atoms in outflows in high altitude regions. The P78-1 satellite data showed that auroral flux tubes can be imaged at EUV wavelengths (834 A) at latitudes of 200 km. Spacelab 1 data further showed that the flux tubes are solar Ly-alpha emission sources at altitudes which could only be affected by the solar wind at densities of about 30/cu cm.
