Chandra Proposal Id #04200145

Scientific paper

The nearby Herbig Ae star HD 163296 has a strong, possibly x-ray emitting, jet extending 6'' above its accretion disk. The combination of an accretion disk and jet in a relatively old Herbig Ae object, a low extinction due to a lack of association with dark clouds, the presence of Herbig-Haro objects along the jet axis, and an otherwise source-free field make HD 163296 a particularly promising object for imaging spectroscopy with Chandra. We propose a 20~ks non-grating ACIS-S observation of HD 163296 to image the jet, disk, and other structures; to provide constrain the underlying X-ray emission mechanisms; and to probe the nature of the magnetic activity, coronae, and outflows of Herbig Ae systems.
