On October 14, 1997, we obtained the first spatially well-resolved, spectrally dispersed images of Io in the FUV over the range of 1150--1730 Angstroms. In these images, which cover a 2'' x 25'' aperture with 0.244'' spatial and 0.584 Angstroms/pixel spectral resolution, we discovered neutral hydrogen emission of up to 2 kilorayleighs near Io's poles, and several new features of Io's oxygen and sulfur emission. In this paper, we discuss these exciting results, with emphasis on the hydrogen discovery, and how they relate to other observations of Io and its environment.
