Imaging polarimetry maps are presented for the starburst galaxy NGC 3256. To the north-east of the starburst region, the reflection nebulosity created by dust entrained in the galactic-scale outflows reaches out to some 7 kpc, which is approximately double the extent in the well-known tidally interacting starburst galaxy M82. Three sources of illumination are located: one is the established 2-μm nucleus, and one of the others may be the "hidden" counterpart of the nucleus of the second component of the merger. These data show evidence for very widespread superwinds emanating from the starburst region of the luminous merger galaxy NGC 3256.
