The large spiral galaxy NGC 5297 has a small elliptical companion, NGC 5296, with a much smaller, much higher-redshift galaxy nearby and a quasar farther off in the same direction. This system has been claimed as a strong argument in favor of noncosmological redshifts (Arp 1976, 1987), especially as the unnamed galaxy shows signs of being silhouetted in front of NGC 5296. CCD images in B, V and H-alpha passbands (1) support the presence of extended material around the main galaxies; (2) deny the reality of the claimed silhouetting; but (3) reveal that NGC 5296 is an unusual galaxy, with a bright off-center very red 'secondary nucleus'.
