Two of the most fundamental outstanding questions regarding the nature of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are (i) what is the process responsible for triggering activity in galactic nuclei and (ii) to what extent can the differences between various observed types of AGN be attributed to their orientation, evolutionary history or intrinsic properties. This thesis explores these questions on the basis of new observations and analysis of samples of nearby AGN and related objects. Although our samples of Seyfert and starburst galaxies contain relatively low-luminosity objects when compared with distant quasars, they are sufficiently close that their morphologies, environments and kinematics can be studied in great detail. The thesis is split in two major parts: (I) the statistical study of the optical properties of a large IR-Warm Seyfert sample and a control IR-Cold sample, based on multi-wavelength optical imaging; (II) the mapping of the structure and dynamics of selected systems undergoing strong interactions and mergers, using the technique of integral field spectroscopy.
