An ideal system for direct acquisition and guidance during an observing run would enhance the contrast between the sky foreground and object and would be sensitive enough to detect the dark moon sky foreground radiation with an integration time of less than about 1/4 sec. Of the various types of low-light-level TV camera tubes available, an image orthicon is found to be more suitable for this purpose than other types, such as an intensified silicon vidicon. The schematic diagram of an image orthicon is described along with its characteristics. A comparison of the image orthicon and intensified silicon vidicon in an astronomical application reveals that image orthicon has a significant advantage of providing several minutes target integration at room temperature. A few seconds integration on the image orthicon target will decrease the scanning beam shot noise considerably because less dc beam current is returned to the electron multiplier used. The resolution performance of the camera tube will also increase because beam modulation improves with target integration.
